An increasing number of start-ups are deciding to recruit people who work remotely

Start-ups are increasingly choosing to employ people who do not work at the company’s headquarters, but from home or from any other location. Below you can find out why this kind of cooperation with employees has many benefits for the company.

The article summarizes the results of the study, which studied remote work in 2017.

Working from home is an increasingly common practice. Even 52% of employees work outside the company at least once a week. This proportion varies according to the scope of the business. For example, in the field of business development, engineering, marketing and information sciences, a significantly larger proportion of people who work outside the company, while in the field of service activities, finance and human resources management, this kind of work is less represented.

This kind of work is especially present at start-ups. Why is that so?

In the study it was found that decision of the management that their employees would work from home, was twice higher in small companies than it was for larger companies. For small companies, cooperation with remote employees is more practical, as such companies are more flexible and the need for innovation is greater.

What are the benefits of a remote work for start-up?

Through remote work to a wider range of candidates

Start-ups are characterized as they are still paving their way to success, therefore it is even more important for the management to gather the best team around them. Thanks to that, the company has greater opportunities to succeed. Finding suitable associates can be an extremely difficult task, especially if you are limited to choose from people around the companies vicinity. With remote work geographical boundaries fall off. With that, the number of candidates is much higher, leading management to increase chances of selecting the best person for the offered job.

Companies that are open to people who work remotely, have a wider choice that allows them to find a person who has all the necessary knowledge and experience for the job, and they do not accept compromises. Study also found out that companies which choose to work with employees who work outside the company, employment is 33% faster than in other companies.

Heterogeneous team

It is already known that for the success of the company, it is crucial that people with different skills, abilities and ways of thinking work in it. In this way, each individual contributes a piece to the mosaic and covers his area. When a company chooses not to have a geographical limitation on employment, employees find themselves in different parts of the country or even the continent or the world.

The London Business Survey, conducted every year, has shown a strong link between the heterogeneity of a group of employees and the opportunity to develop the innovations that drive every company. It has been found that in companies which employ people from different cultural backgrounds, the development of new products is more likely than in a more homogeneous team. Different views on a particular topic are very welcome in the design of new ideas.

Remote work builds up trust

When the company’s management decides for the first time to recruit people who will work remotely, they are rightly concerned about the actual productivity of employees. Since this type of work is more difficult to control, the employer can ask himself if the employee is effectively exploiting the working time.

Stop at this point for a few moments. What is the problem? Is the fact that the employee’s work is carried out miles away from the company the problem? No. In fact, this is a lack of confidence in colleagues.

It is essential for remote work to trust your employees. Although you can’t know that employees are actually doing work at the agreed time, results of remote work are important, which can be easily checked. When you find appropriate mechanisms for communicating with remote employees and ways to check their productivity, the matter is resolved. In the newly created companies, there is so much work to do, that there is no time for supervising their employees.

Greater flexibility

The research in the field of remote work has shown that 51% of people doing work from home decide on this way of working because it is easier to coordinate business and private life. Into employee’s life remote work brings more flexibility, which makes it an important asset for the majority. Employees who are satisfied with the way they work are even more willing to work hard for the company.

Developing a culture in the company

The culture of the company begins to develop at the very beginning of the business. The bigger the company becomes, the harder it is to change. For businesses who are thinking about remote work, it is best to get started right from the start. In this way, the management will be able to develop and modify this type of work first in the context of a small number of people, and with the growth of the company, the system will be already well established, that even with a large number of employees this will not be a problem. From this point of view, start-up is an excellent starting point for remote work. Later, these changes are much more difficult to handle.

Lower costs

Especially for start-ups that do not have much revenue, every euro counts, so the costs need to be crawled where possible. This is also the advantage of remote work, as the company will save on the cost of buying or renting offices where the employees would work, and it would also save on all the equipment and office supplies that should be provided to employees when working at headquarters of the company.

Retaining employees in the company

In research carried out in the field of remote work, it was also found that employees in such working way, leave workplace 25% lesser. The flexibility that a remote work brings with it corresponds to many employees. However, satisfied employees rarely decide to leave the workplace.

As we can see, the decision to cooperate with distance employees has many advantages for the company. Companies that are based on flexibility, heterogeneity and employee confidence, however, have a very good starting point for success.
